Background of the Study
Christian denominational rivalry is a phenomenon that can significantly influence social cohesion within communities. In Ohafia Local Government Area, Abia State, competition among different Christian denominations often manifests in divergent theological stances, community engagement strategies, and resource mobilization. Such rivalries may lead to fragmentation of community efforts, polarization of social groups, and sometimes, inter-denominational conflicts (Chinwe, 2023). While denominational competition can foster diversity and innovation in religious practices, it may also create barriers to collective action and unity, particularly in addressing common societal challenges. The rivalry often impacts social cohesion by influencing interpersonal relationships, community trust, and collaborative initiatives. This study examines the extent to which denominational rivalry affects social cohesion, exploring the underlying causes, manifestations, and potential solutions to mitigate discord. Through surveys, interviews, and case studies, the research aims to offer insights into how inter-denominational conflicts influence community dynamics and to propose measures that foster unity and collective progress (Ike, 2024; Nkem, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
In Ohafia, denominational rivalry among Christian groups has led to divisions that undermine social cohesion. The competition for membership, resources, and ideological supremacy creates an environment of mistrust and conflict, hindering community development. Such fragmentation limits the ability of religious institutions to work together in addressing social issues and promoting collective well-being. This study seeks to investigate the impact of these rivalries on social unity and to identify potential strategies for bridging denominational divides, thereby strengthening community solidarity (Chinwe, 2023; Ike, 2024).
